Is it worth repairing a cracked phone screen?

A screen repair can be excellent value when the phone is otherwise dependable. Use this guide to compare the damage, cost and remaining life before deciding.

The short answerRepairing a cracked screen is usually worthwhile when the phone still meets your needs, has no major additional faults and the complete repair cost is comfortably below the cost of a suitable replacement. Selling or upgrading may be better when the device has several problems or limited useful life remaining.

A crack can be mainly cosmetic, or it can be the visible sign of deeper display and frame damage. Before comparing prices, identify what is actually wrong and what a quoted repair includes.

Assess the screen damage

SymptomWhat it may indicate
Surface crack onlyThe image and touch may still work, but the assembly can remain vulnerable to further damage.
Lines, flickering or black areasThe display panel is damaged, not only the outer surface.
Failed or erratic touchThe touch layer or connection may need attention.
Bent frame or lifting screenThere may be frame or battery-related damage that requires inspection before a screen replacement.
Camera or sensor problemsThe impact may have affected components near the display.
Safety first: if the screen is lifting, the device is unusually hot, the battery appears swollen or there are sharp exposed edges, stop using or charging the phone and arrange professional inspection.

Compare repair cost with real replacement cost

Do not compare the repair only with the cheapest phone you can find. Compare it with a replacement that offers similar storage, camera quality, performance, condition and software support.

Also consider how long you expect to keep the repaired phone. A repair that restores reliable use for another meaningful period can have a low monthly cost. A repair on a phone with several developing faults may only delay replacement.

Repairing is usually sensible when…

The phone is otherwise reliable, performance remains good and the screen is the main problem. It is also attractive when you prefer the device, have accessories for it and would need to spend substantially more to get a replacement you actually want.

Selling or upgrading may be better when…

A screen repair becomes harder to justify when combined with battery failure, charging problems, camera faults, severe frame damage or unreliable performance. Add the likely costs together rather than treating each fault in isolation.

Upgrading may also be more sensible when the phone no longer has enough storage, cannot run important apps or lacks the security support you need. If you do not want to repair it, the damaged phone may still have sale value.

Ask what type of screen and service you are buying

The word “screen” can describe different parts and quality levels. Ask whether the repair replaces the complete display assembly, what part option will be used, how colour, brightness and touch are tested, and whether features such as fingerprint or face authentication require special handling.

Request the warranty in writing and check what it excludes. Accidental damage after the repair is normally different from a fault in the supplied part or workmanship.

Common questions

Can I keep using a phone with cracked glass?

The phone may continue to work, but cracks can spread, sharp edges can develop and protection against moisture or dust may be reduced. Arrange an assessment rather than assuming it is only cosmetic.

Will repairing the screen increase resale value?

It can, but the increase may not exceed the repair cost. Compare a quote for the phone as it is with a realistic repaired value before deciding.

Does a replacement screen restore water resistance?

Do not assume the original protection rating is guaranteed after damage or repair. Ask the repairer what sealing process and testing are included and read the warranty wording.
